“Last night I saw the most exciting, troubling, cathartic, mesmeric performance I’ve seen in England for a decade.Up the hill, round the corner, in a barely funded old chapel… hosted by the wonderful Wainsgate Dances. What hope…”

Richard Gregory

Low-tech and stripped back; performances at Wainsgate are up-close and intimate live encounters.

Wainsgate has become known as a venue for outstanding experimental performance, and a keen audience from the local area and further afield, continues to grow around the programme.

“Performing at Wainsgate Chapel has reminded me how contemporary dance performance can motivate a diverse group of people to work collectively and with confidence, towards a shared event which blesses people with a momentary sense that this is the place to be, and these are the people to be with.”

Jonathan Burrows – Choreographer - performer

A performance at Wainsgate is a special event.

Making people welcome is important to us. Complex ideas and challenging work are made approachable by cultivating an open, warm and hospitable environment.

From the journey through the hills along country lanes to get to this historic and somewhat crumbling building, with its grass-roots homely feel; to the exceptional quality of the work itself, and the lively conversation and buzzing atmosphere in our pop-up bar after the show.

“I honestly cannot think of another art space that is so richly showcasing the diversity of an art form in such a joyful and surprising way.”

Bentley Crudgington - audience member and artist
